Cannabis edibles are products containing cannabis compounds such as THC or CBD that are eaten rather than inhaled. Overseas, these can include gummies, chocolates, biscuits and other foods.
However, New Zealand’s medicinal cannabis rules are different.
Are Cannabis Edibles Available as Medicine in NZ?
Under New Zealand’s Medicinal Cannabis Scheme, a medicinal cannabis product cannot be a product that meets the definition of a food. This means typical cannabis gummies, chocolates and similar recreational-style edibles are not medicinal cannabis products under the Scheme.
Medicinal cannabis is prescription-only. Legal products can instead include pharmaceutical forms such as oral liquids, tablets or capsules, as well as certain dried cannabis products.
Oral Cannabis Is Different From Edibles
Patients sometimes use the word “edibles” for anything taken orally, but there is an important distinction.
New Zealand currently has verified CBD and THC oral liquids, and some dried cannabis products are verified for preparation as tea.
These are regulated medicinal products—not ordinary cannabis-infused foods.
Why Does This Matter?
Products obtained from overseas websites may not meet New Zealand’s quality requirements, and patients cannot simply order medicinal cannabis or CBD products from overseas for personal delivery.
Patients interested in an oral alternative to inhalation should discuss available oils, oral solutions, capsules or other appropriate formulations with their prescriber.
