What Types of Cannabis Tests Are Used?
Two common screening methods are urine and oral-fluid (saliva) tests.
Urine tests generally detect THC metabolites left behind after cannabis has been processed by the body. Because these metabolites can remain for some time, urine testing may identify previous cannabis use rather than very recent impairment. A 2026 systematic review confirmed that detection depends substantially on the testing threshold and pattern of cannabis use.
Saliva tests generally have greater relevance to recent cannabis use. Research has found oral-fluid testing has advantages when the objective is detecting relatively recent THC exposure.
Can You Buy Home Cannabis Test Kits?
Home drug-screening kits are available internationally and may use urine or saliva. However, consumers should check what the test detects, its cut-off level, instructions and reliability rather than assuming all cannabis tests provide the same information.
A screening result may also require professional laboratory confirmation depending on why the test is being performed.
Does a Positive THC Test Mean You Are Impaired?
Not necessarily.
Research shows that THC concentrations in blood and oral fluid are imperfect indicators of cannabis-related impairment, particularly when interpreted on their own.
This is particularly important for medicinal cannabis patients who may use THC-containing medicine regularly.
In New Zealand workplaces, WorkSafe says drug testing can sometimes be a useful part of managing impairment risks, but WorkSafe does not require mandatory drug testing as a prescribed legal requirement.
